Where to keep your eyes on and who to look forward to as the Premier League nears its return.

Premier League 2020/21 fixtures are already out and the season is all set to kick start from 12th September. Match between Crystal Palace and Southampton is to be the first match of this season.

Premier League 2020/21 was supposed to start a while ago. Generally, the Premier League starts around August but due to the delay caused to the 2019/20 season by the coronavirus outbreak, the next season has been postponed. The fixtures of the previous seasons have been accommodated at later dates and following the transfer market stoppage, the season will begin later than usual.

Now let’s have a glance at the teams that can mount a title challenge:

  1. Liverpool: Last season’s champions, there’s really no weak links in this well-drilled team. There were calls for the recruitment of backups and evidently, Klopp obliged. Recruitment of left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas from Greek club Olympiacos is to provide the necessary cover if Robertson is injured or out of form. Whether there would be any more purchases or not, it remains to be seen but the existing unit looks pretty solid and surely they’ll once again challenge for the title. The Reds have been in hot pursuit of Thiago as the Bavarian Giants and the UEFA Champions League winners look to offload the 29-year old central midfielder in the coming season.
  2. Manchester City: 2019/20 was an underwhelming season for City as well as for Pep Guardiola himself. They finished nineteen points adrift Liverpool and defensive lapses have been frequently highlighted as their downfall. The city has already signed Ferran Torres as the replacement of Leroy Sane but their defence needs fortification if they mean to usurp Liverpool. The club has been heavily linked with the charismatic superstar and prince of modern football- Lionel Messi, amidst Barcelona’s failure to win a convincing title and early European exits for years now.
  3. Chelsea: Transfer ban has been a boon in disguise for the London club as they integrated promising youngsters into their mainstay the previous season. However, they have already significantly strengthened their team by bringing in Ziyech and Werner. Kai Havertz is another upcoming German talent that is on the Blues’ radar for some time now. A number of defensive recruitment will essentially revamp the team into a serious title contender.
  4. Manchester United: Though the prestigious club stayed trophyless in the 2019/20 season, Ole’s future in the club seems secure with some prolific football that has impressed the fans and the former greats that the club has produced over the years. A magnificent display of football has also hoisted the club from the darkness that the former boss Mourinho left it in to claim European football spot in the coming season. Though the club was heavily linked with the Bundesliga phenomenon Jadon Sancho, signing the English star seems bleak now amidst financial crisis due to the pandemic. Still, the age-old club is linked with a number of rising Premier League stars like Jack Grealish and David Brooks who could fill in the blanks left due to the inability to sign potential targets. All in all, United fans are more upbeat than ever with the turnaround in fortunes and hope for better things to come in the near future.

Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers might likely be the dark horses of the tournament and cause upsets. They might also challenge for European spots themselves. Shrewd recruitment and good management will give these teams a chance to perform beyond expectations. Leeds United who is making their way back into the league after sixteen years managed by Marcelo Bielsa will be an exciting watch as well. The first time the mercurial manager will be managing in the English Premier League and like always, there would be excited to see what he conjures up.
