Manchester United thrashed AS Roma while Unai Emery stabbed Arsenal in the heart at Spain with a victory for Villarreal in first leg of Europa League Semi Final
Manchester United dazzle with their class against Roma:
Manchester United achieved a memorable victory against AS Roma in the first leg of UEFA Europa League semi-final. The Red Devils started the match brightly, picking out passes easily. This yielded a result when Paul Pogba defeated 4 Roma players to send the ball to Cavani, at the edge of the penalty box. Cavani sent the ball to Bruno Fernandes, rushing into the penalty box, who lifted the ball over Roma goal-keeper. After this, the match changed rapidly as United conceded a penalty. Pellegrini scored from the penalty spot to equalize for Roma. This equalizer was followed by Dzeko’s tap-in from close range after Pellegrini squared the ball to him. At half-time, United trailed 1-2 against Roma. The first half also saw three forced substitutions for Roma including goal-keeper Pau Lopez, who injured his shoulder in saving a long range attempt on target by Paul Pogba. The match changed its complexion after half-time as United equalized with a brilliant goal from Cavani, assisted by Bruno Fernandes in the 47th minute. United again established the lead in the match as Cavani scored from a close range after the ball was fumbled by Mirante, Roma’s substitute goal-keeper on 67th minute. Ex-United player Chris Smalling then conceded a penalty for a rash and unnecessary challenge on Cavani. Fernandes scored his 26th goal of the season to establish a two-goal lead. Within three minutes, Fernandes turned to assist Paul Pogba, as his cross was sent into the back of the net by Pogba’s header. Greenwood, who came on as a late substitute for United, scored another to make the final scoreline 6-2 for Manchester United. Next week, Manchester United is going to Stadio Olimpico to face AS Roma in the second leg.
Arsenal shamed by former boss:
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal performed poorly as Unai Emery’s Villarreal won 2-1 against them in Spain. The visitors played dreadful football in the first half. They seemed unable to complete any of their passes most of the time. This was surely capitalized by Villarreal as they established a two-goal lead before half-time. Trigueros scored within five minutes of the match for Villarreal with an assist from Chukwueze. This was followed by a goal from Albiol for Villarreal. The goal came from a free-kick and horrible defending by Thomas Partey. Arsenal made the situation tougher for themselves after half-time when Dani Ceballos was shown his second yellow card of the match and sent off on 57th minute. After this, Arsenal slowly started to build up their game albeit with 10 men on the field. Bukayo Saka was tripped inside the penalty box as Nicolas Pepe scored from the spot in the 72nd minute. This gives Arsenal a crucial away goal and something to build on in the reverse fixture at Emirates. Villarreal player Capoue was shown second yellow in the 80th minute and sent off. Aubameyang, who came in the match as a late substitute, wasted a last minute opportunity to equalize the score.
