New Zealand Rugby will be announced that they will be cutting ties with SANZAAR and Super Rugby as next year they are looking for a new franchise championship. Rugby Australia has released a statement in response to this.
Chief executive of the NZR Mark Robison said that it was thinking to start a new championship in 2021 following Super Rugby Aotearoa which was a success.
He also said that teams from Australia will be given invitations to participate in the tournament. The Australian teams are taking part in the Super Rugby AU at the moment. There are also talks of including a team from the pacific island which could be a strong possibility.
What is the plan of NZR?
The franchise-based in Hawaii will be part of the Pacific Island team which is jointly owned by former All-Black members. The team will take part in the NZR tournament. They have expressed a high desire to include the Pacific Island team and it will be great news for the championship, as they are very popular with the fans and are on top priority for them, said Mark Robinson.
The Pacific players and the Pacific nations have contributed a lot to the history of Oceania and to the sport in New Zealand. It would give them immense excitement to field a team from the Pacific Island to provide a pathway to players of the Pacific Island and help them to perform at the world level.
Robinson added saying that NZR in association with RA will be working to pursue expressions of interest to take part in the new-look competition. The NZR is hoping to conduct a tournament that will be played between 8 to 10 teams.
The expression of interest will be starting from the next week and NZR would want to finish the process as early as the month-end. The NZR wants strong teams and that the fans will want to watch the tournament all the time. In a press release, RA said responding to the newest disclosures the accepts the proposal of the NZR’s announcement of the competition that will be held in 2021 and in the coming weeks will work together with the NZR. Rugby Australia also added that it is continuing to hold talks with its stakeholders and is constantly consulting the valued partners of the joint venture the SANZAAR.
